Chicago Urban League

Although I was committed to and supportive of the black movement theoretically and practically, my deep engagement was more accidental. When I was writing my dissertation, I taught at Wright Junior College in Chicago. The department chair got pissed at me for arguing that only giving multiple choice exams for the required courses was bad pedagogical practice as they were lousy teaching instruments, and he did not rehire me. I found out the Urban League was looking for someone to run its research department and was able to cut a deal to work half time the first year while I finished writing my dissertation. Paula had been involved in getting the school deseg movement going so I was familiar with it, and made it the priority of Urban League research. The rest is history that swept me along with it.
